More than 500 cinemas in the US will close before this weekend, shaking the film industry.

On Monday, Warner Bros. repositioned a number of highly anticipated films on its calendar including "Dune" and now "The Batman".

Earlier on Monday, Cineworld announced it would temporarily close all cinemas in the US and UK as box office results were disappointing and films like "Black Widow", "Wonder Woman 1984" and "No Time to Die" were postponed.

The move of Cineworld, which owns Regal Cinemas, means that more than 7,000 movie screens will disappear for the foreseeable future. This loss has forced Warner Bros. to rethink its sales strategy.

In addition to postponing "Dune", the studio has postponed its new "Matrix" movie to December 2021, "The Batman" has moved to 2022, and "Black Adam" no longer has an official release date.

The postponement could be a boon to "The Batman," whose production was halted after lead actor Robert Pattinson tested positive for the coronavirus in early September. The comic film had been delayed by months due to the pandemic and only just resumed production when it was paused for two weeks.

The film was shot again in the UK and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The closure of Cineworld and the changes in the film calendar resulted in cinema stocks falling into the crater on Monday. AMC fell more than 11%, Cinemark more than 17% and Marcus Theaters was down more than 6%.

It is likely that more studios will push their films and that more theaters will be forced to close or change operations.

"If the theaters are closed, the studios have a reason to delay," Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said in an email to CNBC. "Keep in mind that the slowdown / cessation of production from March to July impacted the plan for 2021. So these delays fill in gaps created by a production interruption."

Changes to Warner Bros. Film Slate

"Dune" changes to October 1, 2021 "Untitled Matrix Film" from December 22, 2021 "The Batman" is planned for March 4, 2022. "The Flash" is postponed to November 4, 2022. "Shazam! 2" is now arriving June 2nd, 2023 "Black Adam" is now undated. "Minecraft" is also undated
