IOS 14.6 lets you stream lossless audio from iPhone to HomePod

Back in May, Apple announced that it would be launching lossless audio for Apple Music. However, it appears that none of Apple’s devices would support lossless playback at the time, though Apple said the HomePod would receive an update that would eventually support it.

The good news for HomePod owners is that this update is apparently here. If you own an iPhone and have updated it to iOS 14.6, you can stream lossless audio from your iPhone to the HomePod. However, this isn’t quite the promised update we were hoping for, but that will come later.

Instead, this seems like some sort of workaround where if you don’t mind streaming through your iPhone, this could be a good alternative until the update arrives. To the stranger, the HomePod is similar to Sonos speakers, allowing you to stream music directly instead of relying on a paired device like other regular Bluetooth speakers.

You need to stream it via AirPlay and the icon needs to be displayed as “iPhone -> HomePod”, otherwise it will only be streamed in normal quality. It seems like a ton of hoops to jump through just for lossless audio, but that is what you have to deal with now.
