The United States reported 57,420 new cases of the coronavirus on Friday, the highest daily totals since mid-August, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

There are new cases in 33 states in the South, East, and Midwest. Cases continue to rise in the Great Plains region, with Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming reaching record highs for average new cases, among others.

Coronavirus outbreaks have increased in the country's Great Plains after focusing primarily on the east coast and then the American sun belt states. Earlier this week, North Dakota and South Dakota reported more new Covid-19 cases per capita than any other state in the country, while the Wisconsin outbreak showed signs of a "dire" turnaround. On Friday, the state's hospital stays reached record highs, according to Hopkins data.

Officials are increasingly concerned about the rising cases of coronavirus across the country as the nation enters the fall and winter seasons. Health experts have also warned that the upcoming flu season could further call into question the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said he was "not happy" with the scale of US coronavirus cases, noting that the virus could become more difficult to deal with as people move increasingly indoors as the colder months go.

More than 7.6 million people in the United States contracted coronavirus during the pandemic. according to Hopkins data. The virus has now killed more than 213,000 people in the United States.
